SAC Midwinter Meeting 2024

Core Metadata and Collections Section Subject Analysis Committee 2024 Midwinter Meeting January 29-31, 2024 Reported by Janelle West, Vocabularies Subcommittee chair and liaison to SAC The Subject Analysis Committee (SAC) met virtually on January 29-31, 2024. The first two meetings consisted primarily of liaison reports, leaving the final day for continued discussion, follow-up on old business, and new business as needed. Outlined below are selected updates from the meeting. Paul Frank, liaison from the Library of Congress Policy, Training, and Cooperative Programs Division, reported that subject proposals for each monthly list will temporarily be limited to 200, thereby ensuring a more manageable load for the editorial group. LC Subject Editorial Meetings occur monthly and are open to the public. The 2024 meeting schedule is available online. Core Metadata and Collections Section Subject Analysis Committee 2023 Annual Meeting June 14-16, 2023 reported by Janelle West, Vocabularies Subcommittee chair and liaison to SAC The Subject Analysis Committee (SAC) met virtually on June 14-16, 2023. The first two meetings consisted of brief reports by the various liaisons and committee members, with the final day primarily reserved for follow-up on old business and the introduction of new business. A common thread throughout the meeting continues to be ongoing efforts to address prejudicial, racist, and otherwise derogatory and offensive classifications and vocabularies relating to Indigenous peoples, enslaved people, and other areas of DEI work. The first two meetings consisted of brief reports by the various liaisons and committee members, with the final day primarily reserved for follow-up on old business as well as the introduction of new business.    A common thread in nearly every liaison report was the ongoing efforts to address racist and otherwise derogatory and offensive classifications and vocabularies relating variously to Indigenous peoples, enslaved people, Islam, and issues of gender and sexuality. ALA Core Subject Analysis Committee meetings, June 8-10, 2022 reported by Janelle West, MLA CMC Vocabularies Subcommittee Chair and liaison to SAC The ALA Core Metadata and Collections Section Subject Analysis Committee (SAC) met virtually on June 8-10, 2022.  The first meeting focused on questions and answers on pre-submitted written reports from liaisons and ex officio members:   National Library of Medicine, Barbara Bushman, liaison  Written report: SAC22-AN-NLM  Highlights: Some staff back onsite, though building renovations require many to remain offsite. NLM remains closed to public visits Tina Shrader appointed Head of the Cataloging & Metadata Management Section in April 2022 Focus of the 2022 winter edition of the NLM Classification was the evaluation of the 2022 MeSH vocabulary for inclusion in the Classification index.
