SAC: Core Midwinter Report 2023

Core Metadata and Collections Section Subject Analysis Committee 2023 Midwinter Meeting January 18-20, 2023 reported by Janelle West, Vocabularies Subcommittee chair and liaison to SAC   The Subject Analysis Committee (SAC) met virtually on January 18-20, 2023. The first two meetings consisted of brief reports by the various liaisons and committee members, with the final day primarily reserved for follow-up on old business as well as the introduction of new business.    A common thread in nearly every liaison report was the ongoing efforts to address racist and otherwise derogatory and offensive classifications and vocabularies relating variously to Indigenous peoples, enslaved people, Islam, and issues of gender and sexuality. Of note is the report from the Homosaurus Editorial Board, which announced an upcoming Homosaurus application profile and a new community Google group for Homosaurus users. ALA Core Subject Analysis Committee meetings, June 8-10, 2022 reported by Janelle West, MLA CMC Vocabularies Subcommittee Chair and liaison to SAC The ALA Core Metadata and Collections Section Subject Analysis Committee (SAC) met virtually on June 8-10, 2022.  The first meeting focused on questions and answers on pre-submitted written reports from liaisons and ex officio members:   National Library of Medicine, Barbara Bushman, liaison  Written report: SAC22-AN-NLM  Highlights: Some staff back onsite, though building renovations require many to remain offsite. NLM remains closed to public visits Tina Shrader appointed Head of the Cataloging & Metadata Management Section in April 2022 Focus of the 2022 winter edition of the NLM Classification was the evaluation of the 2022 MeSH vocabulary for inclusion in the Classification index. The Core division business meetings are no longer held at ALA; this year’s reports are from the Subject Analysis Committee. Core has switched to online interest group weeks, separate from the ALA meetings. They are not included in the reports because they are virtual and open to all. This year’s starts March 7, 2022.

Core Metadata and Collections Section Subject Analysis Committee 2022 Midwinter Meetings Reported by: Rebecca Belford, MLA CMC Vocabularies Subcommittee Chair and MLA liaison to SAC The Core Subject Analysis Committee met January 20-21, 2022, with approximately 80 attendees at each session. As usual, the first meeting was dedicated to liaison reports and the second to discussion. This meeting marked the debut of the Core Subject Analysis Committee Public Space on ALA Connect, where anyone can access liaison reports via the space’s “Library” tab. SAC: Core Midwinter Report 2021

Virtual meetings held February 26, 2021 and March 19, 2021 Report by Rebecca Belford, Chair, CMC Vocabularies Subcommittee and MLA liaison to SAC New business follows highlight of liaison reports, below. Technical difficulties with the ALA Core Connect Space means that access to liaisons’ written reports has been unintentionally restricted; these are available on request.  SAC Chair Brian Stearns welcomed new associate members Margaret Joyce and Adrian Williams; new liaison organizations and their liaisons Getty (Jonathan Ward), OCLC (Robert Bremer), and LC Children’s and Young Adults’ Cataloging Program (Stacey Devine); and new liaisons for LC Editorial (Michele Zwierski) and FAST (Heidy Berthoud). Vocabularies Subcommittee Report: ALA Summer 2020 Virtual Business Meetings Reported by Rebecca Belford (Oberlin College & Conservatory), Chair, MLA CMC Vocabularies Subcommittee CaMMS Subject Analysis Committee (SAC) SAC met virtually on June 19, 2020, with Brian Stearns chairing. Unlike the traditional ALA meetings, there was no presentation, only a business meeting. Topics included:   Best Practices for Recording Faceted Chronological Data in Bibliographic Records This document was created by a task group, led by Casey Mullin, within the SAC Subcommittee on Faceted Vocabularies (SSFV); see SSFV summary for additional details. The document will be iterative, and an ongoing tool. SAC discussed where to house the document in addition to the ALA Institutional Repository (SAC or SSFV sites), and how to maintain and communicate version control–perhaps numbered versions with have a stable URL to the most recent, similar to MLA’s Best Practices documents.
