MUSIC LIBRARY ASSOCIATION CATALOGING AND METADATA COMMITTEE Business Meeting, MLA Annual Meeting 2022, Virtual Tuesday, February 22, 2022, 11:00a.m.-12:55p.m., MT 1. Introduction and announcements (Vermeij) Hermine Vermeij called the meeting to order and put the agenda in the chat. She noted that this meeting is the second annual virtual meeting. Introductions were made around the table by all the officers present. Joshua Henry announced that he will be leaving Westminster Choir College for a new job at the University of Oklahoma. Hermine put the MLA Code of Conduct in the chat as well and uploaded the agenda again for those who joined a little late. She reminded everyone that committee members can speak without recognition, but others need to be recognized by the chair, preferably by typing “???” into the chat or raise their hands. Virtual meetings held February 5, 9, and 12, 2021. Reported by Keith Knop February 5 The first meeting was largely concerned with procedural matters but also featured reports from two task forces and a presentation and Q&A session with James Hennelly from ALA Publishing. An open question is the nature of virtual meetings in the future; once the Core transition is complete it is not clear if ALA will want all committee meetings to be conducted via an ALA account or if it will be fine to continue using, e.g., the committee chair’s institution’s Zoom account, as CC:DA has been. A proposed task force to review the final draft of the ALA Cataloging Code of Ethics (final version) did not form due to a series of scheduling misunderstandings. The charge of the Virtual Participation Task Force was amended to include investigation of ALA Connect as a tool for committee work,

Introduction and announcements (Vermeij) 1:00-1:10 Hermine Vermeij called the meeting to order and displayed the agenda for everyone to see. She noted that it was the first virtual meeting, which despite lacking the in-person experience that all have come to enjoy, it expands accessibility, a feature that we could take into future meetings. Introduction and announcements (Snyder) 11-11:15 Tracey Snyder called the meeting to order and reminded those present to sign the attendance sheets. Tracey called attention to the printed copies of the agenda for those that had not already printed them. She also reminded everyone that the agenda is on the CMC Blog. ALA Annual 2019 Washington, DC Report by Tracey Snyder, Chair, MLA Cataloging and Metadata Committee (CMC) Linked Library Data Interest Group (abstract and bios available at this link) Saturday, June 22, 2019 Speakers: Erin Dobias, Metadata Librarian, Google Books; Jackie Shieh, Descriptive Data Management Librarian, Smithsonian Libraries; Robert Chavez, Senior Content Applications Architect, New England Journal of Medicine, and instructor of RDF and Linked Data courses for Library Juice Academy. The panelists (with some contributions from audience members) answered questions about their experiences interacting with and teaching about linked data. Question: How do you interact with linked data? Erin works with incoming metadata that is mostly MARC (but also some ONYX), with URIs showing up in some MARC. Jackie works with MARC for the most part, and some non-MARC, looking for URIs and writing scripts for SPARQL queries to transform the data to RDF and get it ready for BIBFRAME.

Report by Tracey Snyder, Chair, MLA Cataloging and Metadata Committee (CMC) Linked Library Data Interest Group (abstracts, bios, and slides available at this link) Saturday, January 26, 2019 Heather Pretty of Memorial University of Newfoundland gave a presentation about a practical implementation of Linked Data to manage information about Royal Newfoundland Regiment soldiers who fought in World War I, collected by the Trail of the Caribou Research Group. Data points collected by the research group include name, hometown, date of enlistment, date of death, country of burial, cemetery name, and much more. It was decided to use Linked Data for this project because it would enable searching across multiple sources to answer complex questions. For example, a researcher could gather names of and information about soldiers from the same specified hometown who were buried at the same specified cemetery. The Bureau is expanding this infrastructure to improve access to this data for program evaluators, policy analysts, and researchers. In addition to issuing surveys (such as the population census every ten years and the economic census every five years), the Bureau collects administrative data related to programs such as SNAP, Medicare, and Medicaid to be used as evidence in evaluating program effectiveness and improving policy. The Bureau collects data and performs research as allowed by Title 13 in order to carry out its mission to measure the nation’s

Reported by Tracey Snyder (Cornell University), Chair, MLA Cataloging and Metadata Committee (CMC) PCC At Large and PCC Participants Meeting (combined session) Due to factors related to the federal government shutdown, the PCC At Large program and the PCC Participants Meeting were combined into one session, and several usual attendees from the Library of Congress were not able to attend, sending their regrets to the membership. PCC Chair Lori Robare began the session with a few announcements. (1) The new PCC Directory is complete, has been tested, and will have a phased rollout beginning in May or June. (2) The volume of correspondence in the NACO email account has been very difficult to manage, especially in light of the federal government shutdown, and participants are asked to please be patient and avoid re-sending messages. Messages should include the LCCN and the 1XX of the authority record in question. The PCC
