LIST OF PREVIOUS GOALS AND PROGRESS MADE

  1. Revise the RDA Best Practices as required for the RDA Toolkit Restructure and Redesign (3R) Project once the guidance and files are received from ALA Publishing (Goal areas: Education, Value of the Profession)
    • ALA Publishing created the shell files for the MLA Best Practices in the new Toolkit in February 2021.
    • A subset of elements corresponding to the MLA Best Practices for Chapters 2 and 3 (Identifying Manifestations and Items and Describing Carriers) of the original RDA Toolkit were loaded into the Toolkit for the April 2021 update. The remaining elements from those chapters have been processed for release in the July 2021 RDA Toolkit update.
    • The Chair has created a draft technical and style guide for working in the RDA Toolkit CMS and has begun adapting batch editing procedures developed by the Library of Congress to work with the MLA Best Practices, in preparation for handing off routine maintenance of and updates to the MLA Best Practices files to the CMC webmaster.
  2. Develop application profiles and/or workflow documentation to support the revised RDA Best Practices. (Goal areas: Education, Value of the Profession)
    • A new version of Supplement 2 to the RDA Best Practices is under revision, scheduled for release alongside the July 2021 Toolkit update. The new version incorporates PCC guidelines for minimally punctuated MARC.
    • A new supplement dealing with authority data and music-specific MARC fields and fields with special significance for music is under development, intended to be used in conjunction with DCM Z1, NACO Music Project Guidelines, and RDA.
  3. Work collaboratively with LC, OLAC, and others to provide input and/or revisions to RDA proposals, LC-PCC Policy Statements, and other documents relevant to music cataloging (Goal areas: Education, Value of the Profession; FY 2019-2020 Action: Engage with Other Fine Arts Professional Organizations to Pursue Collaborations for Meetings, Education, and Advocacy)
    • CSS provided feedback on one proposal for a new RDA element, one NARDAC (North American RDA Committee) discussion paper, and one RSC (RDA Steering Committee) discussion paper.
    • CSS responded to a request from the Library of Congress Policy and Standards Division for guidance for MARC field 348 in the Descriptive Cataloging Manual, Section Z1.
    • The MARC RDA Task Group (a joint group with the Encoding Standards Subcommittee; CSS members Keith Knop, Janice Bunker, Chris Holden) provided feedback on several proposals for harmonizing MARC with RDA/LRM concepts put forward as part of the work of the MARC Advisory Council and MARC/RDA Working Group.
    • CSS member Jake Schaub has assumed the role of chair of the NACO Music Project Advisory Board, taking over from former CSS chair Mary Huismann.
  4. Provide leadership for RDA-focused training opportunities (e.g., MLA-sponsored webinars, conference presentations, etc.) (Goal area: Education, Technology, Value of the Profession)
    • Chair Keith Knop developed and taught a 4-week introductory music cataloging course in January-February 2021 as part of a collaborative package between MLA and ALA eLearning.
    • Chris Holden provided an update on RDA preparation work at the Library of Congress for the Music OCLC Users Group meeting in February 2021.
    • Chuck Peters and Keith Knop presented a session on cataloging electronic score resources at the 2021 MLA meeting.
