Chair’s report (J. West)

• ALA Core Subject Analysis Committee liaison reports
  • Written reports are on the CMC website:

• Final report of the Joint GNCRT/SAC/OLAC Working Group on Compound Terms in the LCGFT Vocabulary
  • Endorsed by SAC and shared with LC PTCP, which concurred that compound terms combining two separately established terms are justified in cases where the combination results in a different meaning than the separately established terms appearing in tandem. 
  • LC is organizing an Advisory Group that will re-examine suggestions in the report and will make an official statement at the conclusion of the examination. 
  • No new compound term proposals will be accepted until the official statement is released.

LC Liaison’s Report (Maarja Vigorito)

• New subject heading proposals taking more time than usual to get through due to lots of turnover in the policy office; pace will pick up as incoming people adjust. They’re doing better on the front end, but things are still slow following editorial meetings. 
• November decisions were released the week before this meeting.
• Q (Kyle Shockey): Has anyone mentioned the expedited possibility for non-problematic terms? A (Vigorito): There is an option for proforma proposals. If going the expedited route, pay close attention to Work cat. in 670; very important to have justification there and in English, otherwise won’t be accepted.

 

Types of Composition List Task Group (Patty Falk, TG Coordinator)

• 7-8 terms were vetted or modified.
• Updated documentation for Principles of the list.
• Will work on Phase II of the project to add plurals for non-preferred type terms this coming year.

 

Thematic Indexes List (MLATI) Task Group (Ann Churukian, TG Coordinator)

• Written report submitted ahead; appended below
• 11 indexes for 9 composers were added.
• 2 existing entries were revised.
• Cleared the backlog resulting from the pandemic plus tackling new submissions; current backlog down to 3 submissions, all recent.
• Made changes to links on MLATI website, which are now embedded in the text followed by the URL in parentheses. 

 

LC Vocabularies Maintenance (Anne Adams, TG Coordinator)

• Written report submitted ahead; appended below
• Completed monthly reviews of LCSH, LCGFT, LCMPT and LCDGFT proposed terms.
• A major focus was terms related to minstrelsy, in cooperation with SACO Coordinator and the African American Subject Funnel; catalyst came from the work of Andrea Cawelti and Jennifer Dunlap at Harvard. 
  • Converted some minstrelsy terms so that they could be used in the broader context of derogatory, racialized “entertainment” related to other marginalized groups (e.g., Minstrel shows as BT of Blackface minstrel shows).
  • Redirects from specific headings to show when not to use these terms (e.g., note in African American wit and humor specifically indicating not to use that term for minstrel-related forms). 
• In addition to the new and revised terms, new qualifier “treble voices” for LCSH Chorus headings.
• Complete list of proposed and approved terms, both new and revised, in the VS Subcommittee Chair’s report. 
• SACO Music Funnel Coordinator’s report (Leo Martin)
  • Presented at the CMC Town Hall on how to propose terms. 
  • 29 music terms were submitted; all terms in the queue from the past year have been cleared.
  • Submission form for proposals has been redirected; proposals should now be submitted via email. Don’t worry about the MARC coding, as the coordinator will encode proposals. 
  • Experimental music and Avant garde (Music) revisions are still in the queue for approval; recommends BPs include advice on using these terms.
  • Recommends that BPs also give guidance for applying Rap and Hip hop terms, as they are an exception in that they are related terms that share a broader term.

 

Deriving Faceted Terms from LCSH/Music Toolkit Task Group (Janelle West, TG Coordinator)

• Mapping updates: LCMPT, LCGFT, and LCSH headings updated through 2021 using 2018-2021 issues of the Music Cataloging Bulletin; will forward to Gary post-MLA. Going forward, the task group will do at least a yearly sweep of new terms to map. 2022 terms will be addressed this year. 
• Looking for a new TG Coordinator; reach out if interested.

 

LCMPT/LCGFT Best Practices Maintenance Task Group (Mary Huismann, TG Coordinator)

• Written report submitted ahead; appended below
• Gathering and prioritizing suggestions for next revision.
• Completed version 1.5 of the LCMPT Best Practices and are awaiting final approval. 
• LCGFT will be the focus in the coming year; please send suggestions. 

 

New Business

• Ad hoc task group for creating a survey on the application and use of LCSH, LCGFT and LCMPT vocabularies; to gauge reliance on LCSH, comfort level and systems compatibility with faceted terms with an eye towards eventual discontinuation of LCSH genre heading usage. 
  • Survey is complete and going through final stages of approval.
  • Projected distribution sometime in spring 2023
  • Will distribute via MLA-L, MOUG-L, among other listservs. 
  • Q (Mark Scharff): What are the factors that will drive discontinuing assigning both LCSH genre headings and LCGFT terms? A (Vigorito): Hasn’t heard anything at this point. A (Damian Iseminger): The structure of LCSH has a lot to do with it, such as adding subdivisions to form terms that turn it into a topical heading, instruction sheet revisions, file maintenance decisions, and turnover in the policy division will all be factors in LC adopting the new practice. This won’t likely be any time soon. A (Casey Mullin): Reminder that LC does not have to lead the way on this; every institution can make its own decision. 
  • Q (Mullin): Is curious about who is using demographic terms, 046, 370 fields in bib records. A (Martin): Maybe MLA can take the lead on LCSH practice, LCDGT, and so forth. A (Vigorito): Using demographic terms and other new vocabularies will help us move away from LCSH and the precoordinated approach.  
  • Q (Ethan D’Ver): In a completely faceted environment, how does one link genre to MOP? A (D. Iseminger): Linking genre to MOP is a legacy thing that was done as a matter of convenience; while they are associated, they are different facets of work/expression and can’t be linked in a flat environment like MARC, but it can be done with linked data. Reminder that in LCSH some terms are already post-coordinated (e.g., Waltzes requires using Waltzes without medium and assigning another term for medium). 
  • Mullin: Survey should give an idea of whether there are agencies that are not ready to drop LCSH because of regulation from outside sources as well.
  • BIBCO standard doesn’t require double tagging; the rules do not require a particular vocabulary, just that an established vocabulary is used. 
  • Keith Knop: Has stopped double tagging at his library but has not written policies yet.
  • Cate Gerhart: Maybe a place to start is to stop double tagging when LCSH and Genre are exactly the same, which is Cate’s practice.
  • Tracey Snyder: Need to involve discovery systems in the conversation.
  • Adams: Many institutions dependent on copy from other institutions and may or may not have the capacity to display genre/MOP. Survey also aims to suss out how universal display is or isn’t. 
  • Scharff: Would be useful to have a list of what would be needed for an institution to be able to drop LCSH. 
  • Snyder: Uses the Strawn Toolkit workflow—type in LCSH and run the macro to get the faceted headings added; there needs to be a tool to refine/suss out the mappings for large database scale implementation (e.g., OCLC or LC databases).
  • Mullin: Agrees that other tools could be developed that make it easier to supply faceted fields without having to have LCSH there; Toolkit wasn’t meant as an end but as a tool to test and refine mappings with a view toward eventually having programs that run widely on WorldCat, individual catalogs, etc. Need to continue working toward full scale implementation.
  • Rebecca Belford: Regarding the systems issue, inquiries have been made about updating the Music Discovery Requirements document with Public Services Committee. 
  • Suggestion that 382 could be a controlled field to make input easier. Multiple people agreed this would be helpful.
  • Gerhart: Thinks that 655 is probably the most useful and most likely for systems to have capabilities to handle. Does the survey cover this? A (West): Yes. Cate: In non-music settings such as literature, 655 is often the only thing added, not 650. 
  • Mullin: Another issue is the need for systems people to manage and implement necessary functionalities. 
  • Weitz: OCLC Is considering many options for the future of controlled headings; 382 will be complicated because of all the extra data (e.g., $v).
  • Mullin: His institution publishes Orbis Cascade refinements on GitHub.
  • West: Feel free to reach out with further thoughts.

Activity 2022-2023

During the past year, the MLATI task group finished clearing the backlog of submissions created by pandemic lockdowns, and we completed work on several new submissions. In response to discussion at the 2022 business meeting, we updated the way the MLATI list links to online resources in order to improve accessibility. We currently have one submission in progress and two pending, all submitted during the fall of 2022.

The Vocabulary Maintenance Task Group proposes new terms and revisions to terms for LCMPT, LCGFT, LCDGT, and LCSH vocabularies, including hierarchy adjustments as necessary, working in coordination with the SACO Music Funnel Coordinator.  This work is augmented by monitoring of the Library of Congress tentative lists for terms warranting attention, and further proposing new terms terms based on those lists.
